Iconic Locations & Ancient Villages
There is something amazing about a place that encourages you to live in the moment, be impulsive, to appreciate simplicity, to wander, to linger, to savor the moment - The Amalfi Coast of Southern Italy is like this.
Most of the towns and villages are close to one another, and in many cases you must go through one little village to reach the next.  Each of these towns has it own uniqueness and artistic beauty for you to experience.

You'll will be traveling with private drivers, allowing for flexible touring at a leisurely pace. Once you arrive in the towns, you are free to be on your own. We are happy to assist with making your visit to each of the towns memorable to you and your interests.

One of the most popular and beautiful towns is Ravello with its Gothic architecture. You will  be able to see the main attractions and to appreciate the charm and atmosphere of this lovely medieval town. If this is your first time in Ravello, be sure to visit the Cathedral in the town center and Cimbrone Gardens.

Authentic Food & Wine
Anne and Dennis Connally recently retired with over 25 years in the specialty food business. With  their contacts and personal favorites, they are able to recommend some great places for lunches and dinners that offer a combination of local osterias, trattorias and restaurants. Many come with exceptional views from the terraces which is adds to The Amalfi Coast experience.
The approach to Southern Italian food is based on a love of fresh caught fish from the nearby fishing villages, fresh olive oil, sun-ripened produce and simple ingredients.  We understand food is personal as well; in order for you to be able to enjoy as little or as much as you choose, not all meals will not be included in the trip price.
The kitchen at the villa is fully equipped including an outdoor pizza oven. If you choose to  stay in for the night.
Complimenting Tuscan cuisine is the incredible range of fine red wines produced in the area. The Antinori's and Frescobaldi's may be the largest wine producers in Italy but there  are over 160,000 acres of vineyards owned by over 4,000 vintners.

A farewell dinner at the villa
One of the gems of this travel experience is that you are free to do as much or as little as you like and at your own pace in the towns visited. Each season the schedule is adapted to include special events of the season, serendipitous moments or to accommodate inclement weather. The villa is within a short walking distance to the towns of Amalfi and Atrani. On the days we have drivers we will depart between 9:00 and 10:00 each day after breakfast. Prior to the trip, you will be given a list with some of our favorite places to shop and dine in the cities visited.

First, we will visit San Gimignano that dates back to the 10th century and it's centered around two piazzas. Once there were over 70 towers of which 13 remain today. Medieval architecture is abundantly represented and one of its main attractions. Then, we will visit the unspoiled town of Certaldo Alto. This gem of a town has not be ruined by tourists, war or changed over time. Built almost entirely of brick, it is well preserved and offers great photo opportunities.
  3. Oct. 17, 2017
Tuesday - A Day on the Water
After breakfast we will stop by the Etruscan town of Castellina. The buildings are from the 15th century including the ancient fortress that dominates its skyline, the Rocca Comunale. Castellina offers amazing views, nice shopes and my favorite gelato in all of Tuscany. Next, we will visit the Gothic town of Siena, whose ochre-colored buildings and ancient ramparts evoke the city's medieval past. On the way back to the villa we will stop in Monterrigioni.
  4. Oct. 15, 2017
    Sunday - Amalfi and Atrani
This morning you will visit the small town of Panzano. Sunday morning is market day in Panzano with vendors selling crafts and foods such as honey, olive oil and pecorino cheese. Everyone is on their own for lunch in this charming medieval village. After Panzano, we will visit the town of Montefioralle or enjoy the villa.
  5. Oct. 18, 2017
Wednesday - Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius
INCLUDED IN THE COST: Breakfast Wine Tasting and Lunch
After entering the town gates of Montepulciano on Corso Street, you'll pass Renaissance palaces before arriving at the Piazza Grande. The views from the top are simply spectacular. This lovely town is rich in church architecture. One of the best reasons to visit is to trythe wines. Next is the beautiful town of Pienza, famous for pecorino cheese. Pope Pius II transformed his birthplace town into the "Ideal City of Renaissance" and it is worth the drive.
  6. Oct. 19, 2017
    Thursday - Positano
INCLUDED IN THE COST: Breakfast Cooking Class with Dinner OR Gourmet Dinner in Town
Impruneta is famous throughout the world for terracotta pots. We will visit a small kiln known for making large pots and statues formed by hand from the ground up. The techniques used today are the same as those used during Roman times. Later, we will stop by a family farm that is famous for percorino cheeses and olive oils. We will have lunch overlooking the vineyards (weather permitting). Our cooking class begins in the late afternoon followed by dinner.
  7. Oct. 20, 2017
    Friday - Ravello, Maiori, Minori
INCLUDED IN THE COST: Breakfast Wine Tasting Lunch Dinner at the Villa
Today we take another beautiful drive up in the hills to another picture perfect village. The main village of Volpaia is owned by the Stinti family and they turned the entire town into their winery where we will have a wine tasting and a tour of the cellars. After lunch, we will visit the town of Radda. Today is a day of gorgeous countryside, rolling hills and picture perfect towns. This evening we will have our farewell dinner at the villa.

    Sunday - Rome
Enjoy a day of total freedom in one of the world's most beautiful cities. We are happy to assist you in making reservations to see museums if needed. For those who have not visited the Galleria dell'Accademia to see Michelangelo's David, it highly recommended and so is the Ufizzi Gallery. You are at your leisure to shop the many stores, visit the churches, or simply sit in one of the many piazzas and watch the people.
  10. Oct. 23, 2017
    Monday - Rome
Many of the popular museums are closed on Mondays, but there is still plenty to do. The Medici Chapels, the Duomo and the Basilica of Santa Croce are both open on Monday's. Inside the Basilica there is the historic leather school where you can watch firsthand the work of its fine craftspeople and purchase one-of-a-kind leather products. You might also consider Dante's House, in the city center or visit the incredible Mercato Centrale.
  11. Oct. 24, 2017
    Tuesday - Rome
A visit to the Oltrarno section of Florence is a nice option for today. The Oltrarno district is known for its artisans who carry on the traditions passed down through the centuries. Wandering its narrow streets you'll find many talented craftsmen just as they have done for centuries in this area. This area has many great restaurants, beautiful churches and is much calmer than the other side of the Arno.

The Benefit of Small Group Tours

Travel at a Relaxed Pace
For travelers looking for more than quick visits the landmarks and monuments before going to the next big city, Villas and Vines offers the alternative. Our itineraries provide time to see the major sites but also allows you to explore the lesser known villages and sites. This slower pace of spending a minimum of a week per location will bring you closer to the lives of the people and their traditions, legendary cuisine, meet local vintners, and enjoy the picturesque landscapes. This is what, we believe, makes a unique vacation something to remember.

We'll introduce you to the things so easily missed by the hurried tourist.   Enjoy walking the cobblestone streets in the small villages, having a glass or two of Chianti on the terrace of a local trattoria.   Understand and appreciate the local culture by meeting the locals in their markets, vineyards, olive groves and shops. Taste the wines and visit the underground cellars and savor fresh prepared meals from locally grown foods. It isn't uncommon to find local artisans displaying their handmade creations as well; woodcarvers, ceramics, paintings and mosaics, artisan foods, handmade shoes and more. You won't just visit Italy on our trip; you'll live and feel it.   You are encouraged to explore the towns and surrounding area and make the trip as structured or unstructured as you wish.

We Take Car of the Details Every Step of the Way
Villas & Vines small group trips  are designed to offer personalized service  for discerning travelers who have become accustomed to higher standards.  We take care of the details every step of the way allowing you to experience true and unique places, many off the beaten path to discover charming Renaissance villages, medieval churches, family owned trattorias, local artisans,  amazing food markets and outstanding wineries.
Private Villas Provide More Than Touristy Hotels
We hand-select only the best of the best villas and we know the "insider" ways to make your vacation experience special, hassle-free, and truly enriching.  We have a number of private villas that we use depending on the season and number of travelers. Each villa provides its own character and will exceed your expectations.
Our small group vacations  allow you to experience the Italian lifestyle that we love first-hand.  The people are warm and friendly and they invite us to taste their foods and enjoy the wines their family has made for years. If you are looking for a travel experience that is luxurious while staying in private villas when in the countryside and boutique hotels in the larger cities, then our small group trips were designed with you in mind.

Relax in a private countryside estate overlooking the hills adorned with vineyards & olive trees. Discover medieval castles & hilltop towns, boutique wineries, take a cooking class, get to know local artisans, and explore the Renaissance treasures in Florence.

Go Beyond the Typical Tourist Attractions
Instead of rushing in and out of the cities only to visit the more recognizable icons, we will go beyond the stereotypical image of tours guides waving umbrellas, checkered tablecloths, and drinking wine from straw-wrapped bottles. We'll visit the smaller villages known for honoring family traditions and a respect for a past ensuring the preservation of these wonderful treasures. Imagine walking the quaint cobblestone villages where the farmers, artisans, craftsmen and their families have been honing their skills for centuries.
You're on Vacation - Feel Free To Do as Much or as Little as You Choose
We've been road-testing our trips for several years in order to make this one of the best trips to experience. In keeping with the spirit of Italy, we keep our itinerary flexible to take advantage of unexpected opportunities, local events, adapt to weather conditions, serendipitous moments and to leave time for wonderful things to happen. In addition, where possible, we have built-in options and plenty of free time so that you can experience the culture and its traditions in a way that's meaningful to you.  Guests are able to do as much or a little as they choose whether lounging on the terrace enjoying a lazy afternoon, enjoying an espresso in the piazza, or shopping for a custom-made pair of shoes.
Great Flexibility in Small Groups
We want our guests to experience something unique and  authentic.  Rather than large buses our small groups have the choice of sharing a premium automobile or being driven in a small van.  This allows guests the flexibility to linger longer in the villages, take a side trip to another town or return to the villa if they choose. The comments we get most often from our guests is that they never would have been able to have these experiences on their own or if they had traveled in a large group.
We pride ourselves in providing you with ongoing, first-hand travel advice and expertise. Please contact Anne Connally today and let your dream vacation in a fabulous villa begin!

Our Travelers

Travelers Who Want Spontaneity, Flexibility and Unique Experiences
We are honored that so many of our guests return year after year for our trips. Over half of our guests have been on more than one vacation with us. They tell us it's because our small groups accomplish what they always sought in their own private travels: spontaneity, flexibility and unique experiences minus the pre-planning and  logistical hassles.  People are very busy these days and it's hard enough to take time for a vacation much less all of the hours involved prior to the trip for planning.

Independent Travelers Who Don't Have Time to Plan Their Vacation
Most of our guests were the type to travel on their own until they joined us on one of our trips.  The other type of guest this trip is designed for are for those that have not traveled to Italy before. We make sure to point out the hot spots and see the things that are high on your priority list. What we hear most from our guests is that they would have never been able to find all of the villages we show them and what is unique to each village without spending hours and hours of planning and research.  It's a joy to be able to take guests to the most genuine restaurants, provide visits to hidden places, or arrange for a private boat along the Amalfi Coast. These rare experiences are at no additional costs . . . because we want everyone to love Italy as much as we do and return year after year.

Travelers Looking for More Than a Whirlwind Tour
People come back time and time again; we seem to have created something that appeals to a certain type of person. Villas & Vines is not for someone simply wanting to see the historic site, check it off of the list and move on to the next town. It is first and foremost for those typically wanting to have a peaceful vacation and be exposed to a culture that enjoys slowing down and being in the moment with family and friends.

A trip to Italy with Villas and Vines is perfection regardless of whether you have been to Italy before.   On the one hand, you don't have to do any of the work of planning the trip.  On the other hand, you are not on a tour guided trip.   You can stay with the small group or head out on your own.   We primarily stayed with the group as Anne and Dennis have wonderful ideas of what to do and see (and eat and drink).  The accommodations were extraordinary both the villa in Tuscany and the hotel in Florence.   We will absolutely join Villas and Vines on other trips in the future. Simply writing this review makes me yearn for enjoying wonderful Italian food and wine with friends in beautiful Italy!
Sharon and Greg, Plano, Texas

Trips to Italy with Anne and Dennis are our favorites: They are a magical combination of freedom (do what you want, when you want) and companionship, (group outings, meals, chill-out times and lots of laughter).
Anne & Dennis know so much about the area:  the history, the best views, the best restaurants and wineries (and usually the owners),  the best travel method, (on foot or in a car), the "must see" locations, that it ensures every minute will be well-spent exploring the beautiful countryside. Anne's extensive research, coordination and first class taste guarantees a luxurious, carefree home-away-from-home.   The villas were so exceptional, we didn't want to leave. The groups she puts together result in life-long friendships long after our travel. Our group of nice, friendly people shared a love of authentic surroundings, wonderful food & wine, fun adventures and  top notch vacations!
